POKOTABI / Narimitsu
中華 成光
Situated along Sakura-dori in Jimbocho, Narimitsu serves time-honoured neighbourhood Chinese staples, from its signature hanchan ramen combining light soy broth with fragrant fried rice, to gyoza and stir-fried liver and leeks.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Step inside Narimitsu on Jimbocho's Sakura-dori, and you are greeted by vermilion tables and walls papered with paper slip menus. Accompanied by the rhythmic clatter of woks from the kitchen, the food that arrives at the table delivers the classic tastes of traditional neighbourhood Chinese cuisine long embraced by the area.
Many diners head straight for the house signature: hanchan ramen, a pairing of ramen with a half portion of fried rice. Despite its deep soy colour, the chicken-frame broth remains light and clean rather than greasy, holding medium-thick curly noodles that offer an instantly comforting bite. Beside it, the half fried rice arrives with distinct grains that retain a moist core, seasoned boldly with the aroma of hot oil and diced fillings. Alternating between mouthfuls of well-tossed rice and sips of piping-hot soy broth makes for an exceptionally satisfying midday meal.
Beyond noodles and rice, ordering a spread of à la carte dishes is just as appealing. The pan-fried gyoza have a crisp, golden sear, giving way to a juicy filling of pork and vegetables that pairs neatly with a cold glass or bottle of beer. The kitchen's high-heat wok work also shows in dishes like crisp stir-fried liver and leeks with beansprouts, mixed pork-and-vegetable stir-fries, and thick slices of chashu roast pork.
With counter seating in addition to tables, the shop works equally well for a quick solo lunch or an evening drink with colleagues. Tables are sometimes shared when the dining room fills up, though attentive hall staff keep things moving comfortably. Payment is cash only, so it is best to have notes and coins ready before you arrive.
